Pavarotti’s last performance (2006)

Pavarotti’s last performance took place at the Opening Ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino (Turin) on February 10, 2006. Pavarotti sang the wonderful aria Nessun dorma from the Puccini opera Turandot.

Pavarotti’s performance was a surprise for the audience that night. Sadly it also turned out to be Pavarotti’s last performance on any stage.

After his death it became known that Pavarotti actually did not sing live. In fact Pavarotti lip-synched (mimed) to a pre-recorded tape. The conductor of the night, Leone Magiera, told this in his book Pavarotti up close (Ricordi, 2008; original Italian title: Pavarotti visto da vicino, Ricordi, 2008).

However, this Pavarotti performance became very popular beacause the opening ceremony was broadcasted live on TV all over the world. Later many YouTube videos of this performance appeared.

When I first published this post in May 2009, I included a YouTube video of Pavarotti’s performance. Sadly, this video is now blocked on YouTube, together with many others, I guess. Only extracts of Pavarotti’s performance from that day remains on YouTube. Look at the two videos below.

Hopefully, Pavarotti’s last performance will appear on DVD very soon.
