New Release: Handel Gold

Really, you might say, did Pavarotti sing any Handel operas? No, he did not sing in any Handel opera at all, neither on stage or in the studio. He did record one aria from one opera, “Care selve, ombre beate” from the opera “Atalanta” (and that’s it, as far as I know). It was originally issued on the Decca LP “Pavarotti in concert” (recorded in 1973, issued in 1975, and now available on Decca CD), with conductor Richard Bonynge and Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna (in spite of the title this was not a live recording).

This aria is featured on the new 2 CD set “Handel Gold“, released in March 2009 (Decca 478 1460 DX2). If you want only one Handel compilation this year (and you should!), you should definitively go for this one as it is filled with glorious Handel singing from classic and contemporary Decca artists. The German version of this release is entitled “Händel Gold” (Decca 480 1968 DX2) and has another cover (see below).
