Luciano and Liszt

Today is the 200th anniversary of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811 – 1886). Pavarotti performed and recorded Liszt’s “Tre sonetti di Petrarca”, and that was it when it came to Luciano going Lisztomania!

Anyhow, these three songs are featured on the live Pavarotti album “Pavarotti at Carnegie Hall” from November 1987. On this recital Pavarotti is joined by John Wustman at the piano (Decca/London CD 421 526-2 DH, originally issued on LP, also available on download and streaming).

One of these three songs, “Benedetto sia`l giorno”, is performed in the video below. It is from a studio recital at the West German television station NDR in 1978. Pavarotti is also here accompanied by John Wustman at the piano.
