Giro d’Italia with Pavarotti (13): Torino

The Giro d’Italia went on its way on the italian roads today, but Big Luciano and Odd Pavarotti wanted to stay behind in the Piedmont region (or Piemonte, as the italians say).

The capital of Piedmont is Turin, or as Big Luciano, Odd Pavarotti and every italian say: Torino. It’s a beautiful city very much worth visiting. Check out this wonderful little guide-book.

Pavarotti fans remember well that Pavarotti held his last public performance in Torino, singing “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s opera Turandot at the opening ceremony of the winter olympic games in 2006 (well, he didn’t sing, he mimed to a pre-recorded recording …).

Today’s Pavarotti related videos are from the 1996 Torino performance of Puccini’s opera “La Bohème” in the Teatro Regio di Torino (“Royal Theatre of Turin”) on February 1st, 1996, 100 years after the world première of the opera in the same city and in the same opera theatre!

Singing together on stage with Big Luciano is among others the great italian soprano Mirella Freni. Freni was, as Pavarotti, born in the italian town of Modena. There are lots of stories about Luciano and Mirella, and Odd Pavarotti will come back to all of them in the many blog posts to come. Look for a Mirella Freni blog post extravaganza!

This performance hasn’t been issued on video (well at least not officially …), but it’s of course on YouTube in 12 parts. Below are two of these videos with the two arias and the duet in the first act. Luciano and Mirella! Wonderful!

Tomorrow is a resting day in the Giro, but Big Luciano and Odd Pavarotti don’t rest! As Big Luciano says: “If I rest I …. “. Never mind! 🙂

More from Bella Italia in tomorrow’s post! Big Luciano and Odd Pavarotti will return! They just have to rest a little first! 🙂
