Out of Berlin’s three opera houses Pavarotti sang only at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (German Opera Berlin), which during the cold war was in West Berlin in West Germany. Today Berlin is, as we all know, the capital of a united Germany.
The easiest way get to the Deutsche Oper Berlin is to take the underground line U2 to the stop “Deutsche Oper”. Look out for the opera related decorations at this station! It’s also possible to travel on line U7 to the stop “Bismarckstraße”.
Here are some pictures of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from my visit on a rainy day in May 2011, including some pictures of the underground stop “Deutsche Oper”.
Pavarotti sang in operas at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on several occasions. In March 1982 Pavarotti sang in Verdi’s opera “Aida” together with the German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
One of these performances has been issued on the Premiere Opera label. From this recording Pavarotti sings the beautiful aria “Celeste Aida”. In glorious voice, of course!
Look out for more blog post on Pavarotti in Berlin! Odd Pavarotti simply loves this city! If you haven’t done so you definitively should visit Berlin! 🙂
