It happens with any singer. The voice changes. Also Pavarotti’s voice changed during his career. In his later years his age and deteriorating health were visible and audible in his performances. But he kept on singing as long as he could!
Hearing Pavarotti in performances from his later years is sometime hard because one remembers the glorious voice of his golden years. But these performances are also a part of his legacy.
So let’s compare! Here are two arias sung by Pavarotti, both in his prime and in his later years. And for those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving: Here is something more to be thankful for.
We start with Pavarotti singing the Bellini song “Dolente immagine di Fille mia”. First from a performance in New York in 1988, followed by a performance in Japan in 2004.
We close with Pavarotti singing the beautiful aria “Celeste Aida“ from the Verdi opera Aida. First from a performance at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) in 1984, followed by a performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2001.
