Pavarotti in Ponnelle’s Rigoletto film now on Blu-ray

One of Pavarotti’s signature roles was the Duke of Mantua (Il Duca di Mantova) in the Verdi opera Rigoletto. Pavarotti sang this role on stage and on recordings. In 1983 he performed the role in a film directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.

This Rigoletto film is now available on Deutsche Grammophon Blu-ray for the first time. It is already been available on Deutsche Grammophon DVD and has been shown in movie theatres and on TV.

This release is the second Pavarotti Blu-ray release (the first was The Tribute To Pavarotti concert), and it coincides with the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth. The film is wonderful both in vision and sound. Highly recommended!

Pavarotti is joined by Ingvar Wixell as Rigoletto and Edita Gruberová as Gilda, among others. Riccardo Chailly conducts Vienna Philharmonic (Wiener Philharmoniker).

In the first two videos from the film Pavarotti sings the arias “Questa o quella” and “La donna è mobile”. The last video is the quartet “Bella figlia dell’amore”.
